Does adding more loft insulation actually make a difference?

Yes, but more is not always better.

If your loft has little or no insulation, adding it can make a real difference to both heat loss and the EPC. If it is already properly insulated, another layer may make very little difference to the rating.

The important question is not simply how deep it is. It is whether the insulation is complete, consistent and doing its job properly.

What actually makes the difference?

The starting point matters most. A bare loft and a well-insulated loft are two very different propositions.

Starting with little or none

This is where loft insulation normally earns its keep.

An uninsulated loft can lose a significant amount of heat. Installing a proper first layer can therefore produce one of the clearest improvements available, both to the EPC assessment and to the thermal performance of the home.

Topping up what is already there

Some insulation does not necessarily mean enough insulation.

Where the existing layer is shallow, increasing the depth can still be worthwhile. The gain will normally be greater than adding the same amount to a loft that is already well insulated.

When more adds very little

This is where the returns begin to tail off.

Once the loft is already treated as well insulated within the EPC assessment, simply adding more depth may produce little or no additional EPC benefit.

That does not mean the loft should be ignored. Gaps, compressed insulation, boarded areas and disturbed sections can matter more than another perfectly laid roll on top.

What we’ve found in the Workshop

Our investigations show a consistent pattern: the biggest gain comes from fixing the biggest weakness.

Moving from little or no insulation to a properly insulated loft can make a worthwhile difference. Improving a shallow existing layer can still help. But once a loft is already well insulated, simply chasing greater depth tends to produce diminishing returns.

The headline measurement can also be misleading. A loft described as having a good insulation depth may still contain gaps, compressed areas or poorly covered sections that reduce its effectiveness.

Before you add more

Check the depth across the accessible loft, not just beside the hatch. Look for gaps, compression and disturbed areas, and establish what lies beneath boarded storage sections. Check the hatch itself, protect ventilation at the eaves and deal with signs of leaks, damp or condensation first.

Water tanks, pipework, electrical cables, recessed lighting and heat-producing equipment also need to be considered. Extra insulation should not create maintenance, access or safety problems.

If your main objective is a particular EPC rating, test whether the extra insulation will actually move the score before paying for it.

What does this mean for your home?

For a landlord, loft insulation is usually worth investigating early. Improving a poorly insulated loft can provide useful EPC points without the cost or disruption of major building work. Topping up one that is already well insulated may achieve nothing at all.

For a homeowner, the decision may be broader. Correcting gaps or poor coverage can improve heat retention and comfort even where the EPC score barely moves.

The aim is not to install the deepest insulation possible. It is to understand what is already there, fix what is weak and add only what will genuinely make a difference.
