Will solar panels improve my EPC?

Usually, yes. But first decide what you want the panels to do.

If the objective is simply to reach EPC C, a modest array may be all that is needed.

If the aim is to generate more of your own electricity, charge a battery or electric car, support a heat pump or export electricity, a larger system may make perfect sense even when the additional panels add very few EPC points.

The best EPC array and the best solar array are not necessarily the same thing.

What are you actually trying to achieve?

Solar PV can be an EPC improvement and part of a wider household-energy strategy.

Those two objectives overlap, but they are not identical.

Reaching an EPC target

For a landlord working towards EPC C, the sensible question is often:

How much solar do we actually need?

Our Workshop testing has shown that a relatively modest array can sometimes capture much of the available EPC improvement.

Increasing the panel coverage may lift the score further, but those extra points can become increasingly expensive.

Test solar alongside the other improvement options. There is little merit in filling every usable inch of roof if a smaller system already achieves the required rating.

Generating more of your own electricity

A homeowner may be trying to do something very different.

A larger array might be intended to support household consumption, battery storage, an electric vehicle, electric water heating or a heat pump.

In that situation, EPC points become only one part of the calculation.

Generation, future electricity demand, self-consumption, battery capacity, export arrangements and financial return all start to matter.

Connection and metering matter too

Panels sitting on a roof do not tell the whole story.

The way the system is connected, metered and allocated to the dwelling can affect how it is treated.

This becomes particularly important with flats, shared systems, landlord supplies and more complicated arrangements involving batteries or diverters.

What we’ve found in the Workshop

Our investigations show that solar PV can produce a substantial EPC improvement.

In one oil-heated rural property with cavity-wall insulation, double glazing and efficient lighting, an appropriately sized PV array moved the rating from D61 to C69. Adding time-and-temperature zone control then raised it further to C74.

That is a good example of solar being used strategically to reach an EPC target.

It does not tell us the ideal solar array for somebody whose real objective is maximum generation or energy independence.

Different question. Different answer.

Before you go ahead

If the EPC is the priority, establish the exact rating required and test a modest array first. Compare the result with the other available routes and see whether increasing the array actually buys enough extra EPC benefit to justify the cost.

If generation is the priority, look at present and future electricity demand, including electric vehicles, heat pumps and electric hot water. Compare expected generation with when electricity is actually used, and consider battery and export arrangements.

In either case, roof condition, usable area, orientation, pitch, shading, electrical suitability, connection and metering all need to be established before proceeding.

What does this mean for your home?

For a landlord, solar PV may be the neat final step that gets an otherwise sensible property across the EPC C line.

For a homeowner, the same roof may justify a much larger system because the objective is completely different.

The EPC can help answer how much solar does the rating need?

It cannot, on its own, answer how much solar does your life need?
